As we evolve into our careers and mature, we realize that our wardrobe necessities also evolve. Naturally, the stores which tend to be easy on our wallets may not be ideal in promoting the professional image we wish to rise to. So here lies the dilemma, the more we advance in our careers our professional image needs to follow suit *no pun intended*
Our intention is not to spend a fortune on clothing, but we need to make the best choices available in order to maximize our dollar. Multi-purpose wardrobe items can be used in several ways, for a variety of outfits and occasions. We must be cognizant, fashion pieces come in for short seasons, so it would be imprudent to spend large sums of money on fashionable pieces. If there is a new trend which you must have, I always advise to either buy it at a reasonable price, have it made by a seamstress or get a knock off version. The truth is, in the next 3 months it will be outdated, and the only reminder you will have of it is the social media picture you uploaded.
On the topic of social media, I’ve encountered so many young women, who refuse to wear outfits or items they have used before simply because they are already photographed with the same outfit on social media. This is where the art of buying and styling clothing to multi-purpose items becomes valuable.
Next time you go shopping, or just looking through your vast closet for an outfit consider these tips as a young careered woman.
Cap sleeve/Sleeveless dresses:
Dresses are very chic and sophisticated for professional women. Even more so they are versatile. And can be styled multiple ways to create different outfits. Wear a sleeveless dress with a blazer or cardigan for work. To transition to an evening cocktail, remove blazer, you may opt to add a scarf for additional color, or a brooch for a touch of elegance, change your shoes from a closed pump to strappy heeled sandals, adding a statement necklace or arm candy always does the trick.
Skater dresses: Dresses always exude a sense of elegance, skater dresses are no different and can go from work/church to elegantly causal to casual with the addition of a belt, change from closed pumps to strappy heels or flats in an instant.
The power of a well fitted white blouse:
White tops are versatile and are must haves for any professional’s closet. Pair it with patterned ankle pant for a day at the office. Re-use the same white top with some patterned shorts or any shorts for a weekend lime with friends. You can also pair the same white top with a full skater skirt for a more sultry and conservative look. Let’s not forget how timeless white tops can be with well-fitted denim. Invest in an amazing versatile white blouse today!
Must haves for those of us climbing the corporate ladder or advancing in our careers. When we say structured blazers we mean those with shoulder pads, and tailored for our body. Shoulder pads give the illusion of excellent posture and upright shoulders. We can use blazers with so many outfits, pair them with camis for office days or button-down shirts or even use them with a pair of ripped jeans (distressed jeans) for an informal weekend work session. (Professional yet fashionable.)Closed black, navy and/or brown pumps: Nothing spells professional and chic boss more than some medium (3-4 inches) heel pumps. Decently heeled pumps add the right amount of feminism and professionalism to any outfit and can make a less formal outfit appear a tad bit more formal. I always recommend investing in good quality leather pumps which will last for years.

Pearls: You could never have enough pearls, they add a touch of elegance to almost any outfit. Treat yourself to one piece of authentic pearls, they are timeless.
Our body types and sense of style are all different, so these are mere guidelines to be used in collaboration with your own unique individual flare and sense of style, and your vision for yourself. We ought to know what works best for our body type and act accordingly.
